This is ANOTHER classic GRIFFIN SMITH, and HILL pattern!
Antique MAJOLICA ETRUSCAN Maple Leaf COMPOTE Ca 1800s
This beautiful MAJOLICA ETRUSCAN MAPLE LEAF COMPOTE
measures slightly over 9” in diameter and is about 5 5/8” tall. It has
beautiful green maple leaves on a lovely pink background.
The base is the trunk of the tree covered with green and yellow
maple leaves. There is a very small very old chip on the base
which you can see in the photo otherwise condition is excellent.
'ETRUSCAN - Maple Leaf'- Note that the leaves are all edged in yellow.
Majolica is earthenware and was not expensive when it was made.
It is a brightly colored, tin-glazed earthenware that became popular in
Britain in the 1850s. By the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in
1876, the craze had spread to the U. S.
GRIFFIN, SMITH and HILL WERE one of the primary American makers of
majolica and is the most sought after in this country. The company
closed in 1893 due to a combination of fire and changing consumer tastes.
The GSH monogram without the encircling phrase “Etruscan Majolica”
is considered to be the earliest mark and is always used inside the
pedestal on footed pieces, butter pats, etc.
