Antique Early 1830-1850 Rare Decorated VIRGINIA MONKEY Crock Field Farm Slave Water Jug w/ Sine Waves Around Upper Portion Initial 'H' mid

Very Rare and Scarce American Antique Jug!

Sine waves run all the way around the upper portion of the jug.

This jug was purchased from the Estate of Leo Huston in Pompano

Beach in 2001. He was the last surviving member whose family had

been long time residents of Ohio - about 3-4 generations. Having

moved there from Virginia Leo did not have much information

on this jug other than it had been in his family for more than Three

generations. The initial ‘H’ is on the front indicating it was made and

owned by the Huston Family of Ohio many years ago but it is a Virginia Jug.

I knew the Huston Family very well. When they moved to Florida

they brought all their antiques with them that they had collected

and inherited over the years.

They loved and cherished their antiques which gave them personality,

character, and the patina we all love.

Usually there was a ball inside which you would hear rattling around in it.

The jug is a holdover from the old days;

because the narrow opening made it difficult to clean, the ball helped scrub

the sides and bottom. This jug has a small open spout on the opposite side

which allowed for air to enter and make it easier to pour the water out.

Today, the jugs are purely decorative and collector items and are not

intended for use with food or drink. This jug was probably made by a

member of the family to be used by the family or by a slave to be used as a

FIELD WATER JUG. It has Sine Waves all

around the upper portion just under the spouts and the handle is in the

middle on top. The jug measures just over 12” tall and about 7 1/2” di at

the widest point. Condition is really excellent for it’s age

except it appears to have some white paint splattered in places on it.
