Much of what we know of the way steamboats looked
between 1835 and 1900 comes from the paintings of
John and James Bard. Often considered folk artists
because of their naive directness and simplicity of their
work, they created works that have become icons of Americana.
As well as the numerous illustrations there is a list of known
Bards at the rear. The text details their lives and work.
